Anyone interested in maths education should read this blog co-written by Charlie Stripp and I about #TIMSS2023 https://lnkd.in/exUTC32b. Headlines are: - At year 5 and year 9 English maths attainment remained steady, unlike some other high-performing and comparable countries which fell, - Our performance rose at the higher attaining end: about 1 in 5 students reached the highest level - We scored higher in the 'knowing and applying' domains and the 'number and data' domains. Points to attend to in future are: - We have a big gender gap at year 5 and year 9 - Our lowest attaining students continue to find maths challenging - We scored lower in the 'reasoning' and 'geometry' domains. Teaching strategies designed for any one of these areas will have an overlapping effect. Young girls play less with toys such as Lego than boys and girls respond well to supportive and inclusive environments and a transparent pathway for improvement. Classrooms where all children engage in mathematical reasoning and discussion disproportionately improve performance of girls and lower attainers. NCETM and #MathsHubs already attending to the above through #teachingformastery principles, #oracy projects and #securingfoundationsinyear7.

Tokens of Esteem: Retirement gifts in Modern Britain 1860-1930 The ‘Tokens of Esteem: Retirement gifts in Modern Britain 1861-1930’ project will investigate the material culture of retirement from the Victorian period up to 1930. Between 1860 and 1930 large companies started to bureaucratise employment relationships. This saw the rise in occupational pension schemes, and a new stage of life, retirement, became accessible to more people. Gifts and presentations had long been a part of working culture, but with the creation of a new stage of life we see a new ritual develop. This project will examine how and why the practice of retirement gifts developed in the early years of its practice and what it tells us about life and work relationships as well as how old age and retirement was viewed by different people from different roles around the country. It forms part of a larger book project examining the culture of retirement between 1860 and 1930.

Lit in colour impact report just out. Shows that ‘10% of students taking Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Literature now study a text by an author of colour.’ ‘This is 100 times more students than before the Lit in Colour Pioneers Pilot Programme.’ Lit in colour started 5 years ago and in 2024. It’s sad that there is still a need to address the lack of representation of authors of colour in our text books. Despite 33% of students being from UKME/GM backgrounds, we’re still having to talk about the need for campaigns to tell schools that they need to diversify their curriculums. #curriculum #education #schools

Creating STEM teacher networks Pleased to share findings from research and evaluation of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Connecting STEM Teacher programme. This report provides key learning from the programme and related literature about how to develop teacher networks to support teacher professional development.
